THE LEGAL PROFESSION DOES NOT HAVE FIXED TARIFFS

The Belgian Bar recommends that its members (all Belgian lawyers) expressly discuss their costing fees beforehand, and that they do this in writing.

As much as possible, your lawyer will provide you an estimate of the total expenditures, or he will inform you about the financial implications of the treatment of your case. Furthermore, your lawyer should quickly inform you about possible developments in the case that need extra work. They may have an influence on the total costs.

WHAT DO YOU PAY TO YOUR LAWYER?

Your lawyer's invoice mostly consists of the fee, which is the amount your lawyer asks you for his professional services, plus the 'advanced procedure costs'.
The advanced procedure costs are the expenditures paid out by your lawyer for the case (legal charges, bailiff charges, travel and residence costs).
For any office charges, i.e. correspondence, telephone, facsimile and photocopies, your lawyer will invoice you a fixed rate in his fee, or a fixed lump sum.
